Touching Shoulders

When I was first dating my husband he read me this poem and since then I have always loved it. I thought about it when we were at the Whitney's this last weekend. About what a privilege it is to rub shoulders with the people that were there. So I wanted to post it and share. I don't know who wrote it originally.

There's a comforting thought at the close of the day, when I'm weary and lonely and sad, that sort of grips hold of my crusty old heart and bids it be merry and glad. It gets in my soul and drives out the blues, and finally thrills through and through. It is just a sweet memory that chants the refrain: "I'm glad I touched shoulders with you!"

Did you know you were brave, did you know you were strong? Did you know there was one leaning hard? Did you know that I waited, listened and prayed, and I was cheered by your simplest word? Did you know that I longed for that smile on your face, for the sound of your voice ringing true? Did you know that I grew stronger and better because I had merely touched shoulders with you?

I am glad that I live, that I battle and strive for the place that I know I must fill; I am thankful for sorrows, I'll meet with a grin what fortune may send, good or ill. I may not have wealth, I may not be great, but I know I shall always be true, For I have in my life that courage you gave When once I rubbed shoulders with you.

Hello my name is Shonie Griffin,
I was googling an old poem my grandfather wrote, and It brought me to your web site.
I figured you might like to know who wrote it.
My Grandfather was William Maugh born Sept 29, 1906, died April 11 2000.
He enjoyed playing the accordion for his elderly friends,
And had a love for rock hunting and polishing.
Jewelery and rock clock making was also an enjoyable pastime
His poem has been stolen by the girl below,
I filed a grievance and the site has since removed it,
along with the other 20 poems she had published.

Oct 17, 2008 ... Touching Shoulders - by Selena Readmond .. *For Luke Holt* There's a comforting thought at the close of the day When I'm weary and lonely ...

A little more proof that helped me prove my case:

Nan Hodge (8/21/2010 10:53:00 AM)

Selean Readmond must have written the poem Touching Shoulder when she was a very young woman and not taken credit for it at the time of it writing. The poem is published in a book from 1936 with an unknown artist. Since this book has been reprinted many times perhaps it is time that miss Readmond approched the publisher with the proof that she wrote this poem so her name cane be added to it at the next printing. Or perhaps it should still be by Unknown.
Thanks,
Shonie M. Griffin

Shonie... I did not know that. As far as I know there was not an author for this poem that I credited on this entry so I hope that I've not violated any copyrights. And I certainly hope that the right person gets the credit some day soon.

Thanks for posting about it.

Hello No problem i love seing my grandfathers poem put to use, as you have done. :) It was published as anonymous which was a not so good move on his part. As long as i don't see anyone trying to take credit im all good. Glad his work does good in lives. Thanks for being you!
Shonie.
